Let's face it, if you're anything like me. In your 20-er-somethings, working full-time, living out of home and been in share houses and living with a partner. It's most likely you have or you do live in a small apartment (if you're from Melbourne). Oh how I dream of one day living on 100 acres of land! And if you don't own it, you're renting which is even worse because you can't really make cosmetic changes.
For now, I thought I would share some of my top tips on how to brighten up a small apartment and add personality without cluttering!
TIP NUMBER 1: INDOOR PLANTS
Add some indoor plants to different rooms in your home, they are a great way to clear the air and add some zen to an otherwise lifeless room. I surround myself with greenery in every room of the house. Sometimes something small like a succulent or air plant works best in small rooms like bathroom or toilet. Then larger plants in the living areas - these will take more care, but you are around them more often so it's easy to remember.
TIP NUMBER 2: ART
Add some art to the walls. Shop around on either Etsy.com for some affordable art, or even head to a local flee market to get yourself some colourful art to the walls. Use the art to brighten up different spaces in your home. I like to use different textures on my walls just like with my soft furnishings, so I use weavings, paintings, photography and prints to hang around the house. And because my man is a music maker, we hang his beautiful guitars around the place too!
TIP NUMBER 3: RUGS
Add a light coloured rug to different spaces, to lighten them up and create a feeling of a separate "room" in the space. Having a rug under your lounge and coffee table when you have an open plan living area, makes the room feel bigger - like you have two separate rooms in the one.
TIP NUMBER 4: MIRRORS
Use a large mirror strategically.
By putting a large mirror into the bedroom, when you otherwise have a small bedroom - can really open up the space and make it feel bigger than it is! It also allows the light that comes in, to reflect around the space more than it would otherwise.
TIP NUMBER 5: KEEP IT SIMPLE
Keep it minimal. Try not to over-doo the place with styling and having too much stuff. I like to keep things with a purpose, that a beautiful or that I have a strong connection to. Of course, I love stuff and so does my man, but when you have your awesome stuff everywhere in a small place, it can start to feel very claustrophobic. Plus I knock things over ALL the time!
Using a neutral colour palette can help with the "keep it simple" motto as well. Use light coloured furniture and rugs, then add colour with your art and personal pieces and soft furnishings!
And there you have it, my top tips to brighten up a small apartment! I hope they help turn your dark little place, into a spacious love-filled stylish home.
